Norwich Guildhall is Norwich’s beautiful designed medieval hall in the centre of the city located on Gaol Hill. It is a Grade I listed building, built in 1413 and housed Norwich’s local government until the 1930s. Today, the building is home to the Norfolk & Norwich Festival which promotes and celebrates arts and culture across Norwich, Norfolk and wider region. For over 2 weeks in May, the Festival runs arts events across the city using the Guildhall as a gallery space and centre for the Festival.
As part of renovation works, Norwich Guildhall was looking to increase the accessibility to the over 600 year old building. This included creating step free access in the main lobby area. This would allow wheelchair users to access the whole of the main body of the guildhall. Access Lifts worked with Hudson Architects to specify and then install a Hidden Platform Lift. With a low pit of only 155mm the Hidden Platform Lift is perfect for listed buildings such as Norwich Guildhall. The minimal enabling works means most heritage buildings will be able to provide disabled access which is sympathetic to its surroundings with little effort.
The lift was fitted with an on platform control post in brushed stainless steel, rubber trims and key fob remote controls. The remote controls allow members of staff to use the lift whilst the on platform control post allows the visitor to use it independently. The Hidden Platform Lift at Norwich Guildhall was installed in September 2022.
