Edes House

Edes House is a Grade I listed building in the heart of Chichester city centre. The building, completed in 1696, for John Edes has undergone several name changes over the years and was once thought to be originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren however this theory has been proved unlikely. The house was the location of West Sussex County Council offices from 1916 till 1936 before other uses by the council until 1989. After this date the building became a wedding and exhibition venue.

The building has recently undergone a major refurbishment and Access Lifts were asked to tender for the external platform lift works. This would include removal of the existing redundant platform lift and design, supply and install of a new external scissor lift. Access Lifts were successful through the tender process and worked with the client's lift consultant, LECS UK, to specify the new scissor lift.

The specification would be for a high quality scissor platform lift.  Features of note include the 90º adjacent entry, bespoke upper landing gate with railing design, automatic openers at each level and powder-coated metalwork in Jet Black - RAL 9005 with brushed stainless steel accents. The lift needed to be of high quality and robust design due to the basement location of the lift as well as proximity to the sea. The lift construction is made out of hot-dipped galvanised steel with brushed stainless steel material found on the landing and platform operating panels.

The existing lift was removed and new lift installed within 4 days. The new lift was installed prior to the busy summer season for weddings at the venue.

Beaumont Hotel

The Beaumont Hotel is an independent 5-star hotel situated just off Grosvenor Square in the heart of Mayfair in London. The hotel is in a throwback to the 1920s and is located in a grand Art Deco building overlooking Brown Hart Gardens offering a perfect location for luxury shopping to its visitors. The hotel recently acquired and then renovated the adjacent site at 2 Providence Court to increase the number of guest rooms, add 2 new dining rooms and add new event spaces.

The architectural practice ReardonSmith Architects led the planning and design of the refurbishment with design works. ReardonSmith contacted Access Lifts in Summer 2021 to look at specifying a bespoke platform lift providing access across a split level on the ground floor within the new extension at 2 Providence Court.

The specification was unique with a number of challenges to overcome. 1) The lift would require a custom platform size to maximise the existing shaft constraints which was a pit meauring 1145mm wide x 1670mm long. 2) The existing concrete slab meant that only limited loadings were allowed through the floor therefore a side acting mechanism was preferred. 3) The lift would have to have bespoke finishes inside and out to match the interior design of the wider project. 4) The lift shaft featured an existing riser that would need to be interlocked with the lift to allow maintenance for other contractors.

Within the 1145mm x 1670mm pit we were able to produce a platform measuring 925mm x 1640mm with a side acting rack and pinion mechanism fixed into the shaft wall. Access Lifts worked with the main contractor DE Group Contracting and their chosen door supplier to create bespoke automatic swing landing full height doors for both landings. The landings also featured bespoke bronze and black push buttons. The platform itself was powder-coated in a bespoke site wide colour and the platform lift’s floor and pit was tiled to match the rest of the hotel’s flooring. The lift shaft was finished in site wide luxury wall paper and the riser was interlocked with the lift to allow authorised access only.

The lift was installed and commissioned in Summer 2023. Access Lifts also installed a dumbwaiter as part of the package.
