Brixham – Outdoor Home Lift

We were approached by a private client in Brixham. Brixham is a seaside town in the Torbay area of South Devon; famous for its fishing, it is also popular with tourists during the summer months. As with many properties in the coastal areas of the South West, this property in Brixham was located on a steep hill with the road level several metres above the main entrance into the property. The client was extensively redeveloping the property and during the works was trying to find an alternative access route to the steep steps that lead to the front door.  We worked with an architect to design a lift that would provide access from the parking at street level to the two floors below. The middle stop would provide access to the holiday let attached to the property, whilst the bottom floor would lead directly into the client's home.

This outdoor home lift comes in its own self-supporting glass and steel structure. For this project in Brixham the steelwork was colour matched (RAL 7044) with the stone slabs on the top floor as well as some of the stone in the cliffside. The transparent glass panels of the lift shaft allow as much light as possible to enter down into the shaft and into the property below. In addition the lift features a panoramic glass side so the client can still enjoy the view of Brixham whilst travelling in the lift. The COP side of the lift is finished in polished stainless steel which makes the lift feel as spacious as possible and reflects the lift throughout the cabin. The lift was fitted with a security keypad in the cabin. This means that only guests with the correct passcode can travel to the middle floor to access the holiday let and there is a different passcode to travel to the client's floor.

Billericay – Outdoor Home Lift

We were approached by a private client in Billericay, Essex as they were looking for a lift to make their flat easier to access. Billericay is situated close to the M25 and is desirable amongst commuters and city workers with good transport links into central London. The client's flat is located in central Billericay, just off of the High Street. There were two sets of steps leading up to flat, one was a metal spiral staircase the other a set of concrete paved steps. Objectively the spiral staircase looked beautiful, however practically it was much steeper than the other set of steps and the client's dog couldn't use them due to the gaps in the metalwork. The client decided to remove the spiral staircase and replace it with a lift.

We designed and installed a lift that comes in its own steel and glass structure which then butts up to the exterior wall of the building. The damp-proof barrier is then integrated into the lift's structure forming an impenetrable seal around the lift. The difference between floor levels from the courtyard to the front door level is 4.9 metres. We even used the existing front door aperture and simply fixed our door frame into the space. The cabin measures 1200mm x 1200mm which means there's ample space to take shopping and other heavy items up and down in the lift. The cabin is finished with a polished stainless steel COP and skirting then a panoramic glass side to allow as much light into the lift and into the property. The lift also features return to ground function so that after a certain time period the lift descends allowing as much light through the front door as possible. The lift's structure features the steelwork in anthracite grey (RAL 7016) with smoked glass panels. This gives the lift a modern look which reflects the interior design of the flat, the colour of steelwork matches the window and door frames on the second floor.

South Croydon

We were approached by a private client in South Croydon who were struggling to access the front door. The only route is via a steep garden path that snaked from the pavement level to the front door. In winter ice makes the path impassible and the risk of falls is extremely high. The client needed a way of getting from the pavement level to their house level safely and the only space available was in the single garage. We came up with an idea of having a lift in a fully enclosed glass and steel structure which would allow users to travel from inside the garage and then straight out onto the front door level.

The lift travels a total of 3.8 metres and has a small ramp instead of a pit. The cabin measures 1100mm wide by 1400mm deep and is finished with polished stainless steel. This allows light to reflect down the lift shaft and into the garage below. We even designed and fabricated the walkway to allow a safe way of getting from the lift into their home. The size of the cabin allows the clients to drive their mobility scooters straight into the lift in the garage and then directly through their back door via the walkway. The walkway even has a roof so that the client is completely protected from the weather from garage to house. This ease of use allows shopping to be delivered and taken directly into their kitchen. We worked with the other trades on site to make sure that the lift and works were installed quickly so that the client could use the lift during the bad weather at the start of 2020. The lift was finished with foliage-like screening as the client was looking to grow several bushes and trailers around the structure.
